The best way to protect a goat herd is by using guard dogs. Great Pyrenees, Anatolian, and Akbash are some of the best for this purpose. These dogs are raised with the goats and have a natural instinct to protect the goats from all predators, including coyotes, feral dogs, bobcats and even wolves, bears and Mountain Lions. The training is done by the alpha female out in the pasture with the goats. She makes sure that the young dogs do their job correctly.

The White Anatolian - $500
Guard dogs learn to be good guard dogs from other guard dogs. One of our best was a pure bred Great Pyrenees momma that lived with the goats and pups in training. She once caught a six month old male dog messing with one of the kid goats. Frank witnessed as she challenged and engaged the offender in a fierce dog fight. In the end the male offender was laying on his back, belly up and whining, a symbol of complete submission. The Great Pyrenees momma let out a low resounding bark as if it say, "You do that again and I will kill you." That dog never again bothered any goat and now has a herd of his own in California.
While these dogs can be cute at times, for much the country a good guard dog is a necessity. One customer reported he noticed his guard dogs were staying close together. The next morning he noticed one was bloody, and soon found three dead coyotes in the goat pasture. Then later, they found two dead stray dogs. Don't let predators reduce your profits. Buy good guard dogs with your herd.
